Civilisations such as the Mayans turned star gazing into an exact science; using science we know nothing of, to calculate planet and star movements. The Greeks managed to get modern humans on the road to star science. Somewhere in all of this the prophets, soothsayers, witch doctors and seers found a perfect vehicle to foretell the future and tie mankind’s fate and future to the stars. You were born at this time, when the planets were in such and such alignments, so therefore you have these particular traits. How can you argue with that! – especially as most of us look at the sky and see a mass of stars, planets and other heavenly bodies with no pattern or meaning. As a human I need meaning, I want to see the future, I want to know that my life is not the result of random events and that my death is not the end. I am not really interested in figuring it out…. enter the zodiac – an interpretation of the stars and planets, and their movement, that fills my needs. Astrology – based on astronomy. Belief based on fact…. can’t argue that the stars are not there – but you can argue with the meaning of those stars and the meaning based on the configuration. The star signs are based on reality – look at the skies configuration at that moment in time, and you have your answers. The zodiac will give your answers to your personality type, your strengths and weaknesses, and with a bit of fancy footwork, will also help you choose a compatible partner. “Well he is a Leo, and she is Pisces – so it will never work” – Bam – relationship doomed. Or how about – she’s a Sagittarius – you know Sagittarius can’t look after their money.”? – Bam…. destined for poverty. The Chinese horoscope does the same job. In fact if you look closely enough you will find every civilisation has a similar fortune telling system. Something that takes away some of your own responsibility and power and gives it to the great unknown. Of course, like priests, there are always those qualified enough to intercede and interpret the great unknown. (For a small fee) As much as we humans want power, we also run from it. How much easier is it to say – “well that’s out of my control” – “the devil made me do it.” – “I am that type of person – I cannot help it.” Have you noticed when zodiac believers meet new people – “So what star sign are you?” they ask. “Aah…that explains it” or “you know he is a Taurus – you will never get on together.” They slap a label on to you and it is very difficult to shake it off. Then again – some people like labels – “I am a Virgo you know” as if that clears everything up – and now you know me intimately. It makes us feel safe – knowing that we have everything boxed and explained. Symbolic jewellery has been around since people started adorning themselves – which I reckon was very early. Initially people wore items as talismans, protection charms and for utility. Like hanging a digging stick at your waist. As our view of the world, and our view of ourselves developed, so did our need to look good. Our need to label ourselves kicked in. People started wearing badges and symbols to identify themselves. Armies, countries and factions found a great way to spot the enemy. Governments found a way to place power in a symbol. Tribal jewellery or symbols performed the same function. Take the power from the person and place it in an object. That object can be taken away – and with it your power. It can also be given to many thereby controlling power. The guys, who control the symbol, control its power. Build the power of the symbols through fear, ignorance or indeed good deeds, and you build the power of the symbol. People die, symbols do not…. and you have a ongoing, never ending power symbols to pass on to the next.
